The Law School Welcomes New Senior Staff

The University of Chicago Law School is proud to announce two new members of its senior staff.  Susan J. Curry joined the Law School on July 12 to head our new Public Interest Law and Policy Program, and  Amy Gardner, ’02, will join the Law School as Dean of Students on August 1.

Ms. Curry has spent nearly her entire legal career working in the public sector. Following a short time practicing with a law firm, she worked at the Better Government Association as a staff attorney and then as Assistant Director. In 1992, she became the Legal Director of AIDS Legal Council of Chicago and was promoted to Executive Director the following year. She served as the Executive Director of both PFund and the Minnesota Justice Foundation. Upon her return to Chicago, she consulted with foundations and non-profit organizations before becoming Executive Director of the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) in 2004. At PILI, Ms. Curry created opportunities for law students and lawyers to do pro bono work and also administered the PILI law student internship and law school graduate fellowship programs. In addition to her role in counseling students wishing to pursue legal careers in the public and nonprofit sectors, she has also developed and  taught courses on non-profit and public interest  lawyering.

Ms. Gardner has been a devoted member of the University of Chicago community. She has long served as a mentor for the Law School Women’s Mentoring Program and a moot court judge, as well as serving on the Alumni Admissions Committee and as the gift chair of her class’s fifth reunion. She is a member of the University’s Alumni Board of Governors, and has been heavily involved with the University of Chicago Alumni Club of Chicago, serving as its president from 2008 to 2010. The University recognized Ms. Gardner’s commitment with the University of Chicago Young Alumni Distinguished Service Citation in 2007. Ms. Gardner is currently a partner in the litigation department of Ungaretti & Harris LLP, concentrating in general commercial litigation and intellectual property litigation. Before joining Ungaretti & Harris, Amy was an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. During her career in law practice, she has also done substantial pro bono work, including serving as a Guardian ad Litem representing children who are the subject of guardianship disputes.
