In an age of terrorist attacks and distrust, how, asks Martha Nussbaum, can individual belief systems be supported and regulated? Perhaps we’re heading away from cultural pluralism. In this event at the 2012 Melbourne Writers Festival, Professor Nussbaum discusses the recent banning of the burqa throughout Europe, and the ethical and legal ramifications of such bans on society as a whole.

Martha Nussbaum, is Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, a chair that includes appointments in the philosophy department and the law school. She also holds associate appointments in classics, divinity, and political science, is a member of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies, and a board member of the Human Rights Program. She is also author of five novels.
