Eric Posner Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences
The University of Chicago Law School proudly recognizes the election of Eric Posner, Kirkland and Ellis Professor of Law, to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, an independent policy research center made up of the nation's leading "thinkers and doers."
Posner, a prolific scholar specializing in international law and contract law, and 228 others whose elections were announced on Monday join a celebrated list of scholars, scientists, jurists, writers, artists, civic, corporate, and philanthropic leaders who belong to the Academy. Its diverse membership provides the opportunity for a wide range of interdisciplinary, long-term policy research.
"We are pleased to welcome these distinguished individuals into the Academy," said Leslie Berlowitz, Chief Executive Officer and William T. Golden Chair. "We look forward to drawing on their knowledge and expertise to provide practical policy solutions to the pressing issues of the day.
Posner joined the Law School faculty in 1999 and has served as an editor of The Journal of Legal Studies since 1998. His books include Climate Change Justice (2010), The Perils of Global Legalism (2009), The Limits of International Law (2005), New Foundations of Cost-Benefit Analysis (2006), and Terror in the Balance: Security, Liberty, and the Courts (2007). Posner teaches Contracts, as well as a course this quarter examining legal issues from the financial crisis of 2008-09.
The Academy was established in 1790 by John Adams and includes historical notables such as John Hancock, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Albert Einstein, and Winston Churchill. Other members have included winners of the Nobel, Pulitzer, and Shaw Prizes; MacArthur and Guggenheim fellows; and Grammy, Tony, and Oscar Award-winners.
Other Law School faculty who have been elected to the Academy are Professors Douglas Baird, Judge Frank Easterbrook, Richard Epstein, R.H. Helmholz, Saul Levmore, Martha Nussbaum, Judge Richard Posner, Geoffrey Stone, David Strauss, Judge Diane Wood; and Professors Emeritus Ronald Coase, Kenneth Dam, and William Landes.
