Preparing for Graduation
Degree candidates participating in the University Convocation and the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony must have successfully satisfied all curriculum requirements, and passed all examinations. In addition, all degree candidates must complete an online degree application through myUChicago by the deadline set by the University Office of the Registrar . No exceptions will be made.
The Graduating Students Committee is involved in planning the Graduating Students Dinner, selecting the faculty hooders and award recipients, and coordinating the fundraising for the Class Gift.
See http://convocation.uchicago.edu/guests/ (transportation and lodging) for more information.
Tickets are not required for the University Convocation Ceremony.
Each marching graduate will receive four tickets for the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony and six tickets for the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony simulcast in the Law School Auditorium. Guests must have tickets to attend the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony and to attend the simulcast. Tickets will be available for the Ceremony from Candace Bergeron in the Office of the Dean of Students beginning Monday, May 12. Each graduating student will receive up to 4 tickets to Rockefeller Chapel. Students must pick up tickets by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16. Failure to do so will result in reassignment of the tickets to someone on the waitlist. We cannot make exceptions to the 4:30 p.m. May 16 deadline.
Additional tickets will be distributed beginning Monday, May 19. We will continue to distribute additional tickets up to June 13 if requests remain unfilled. Tickets to the simulcast of the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony in the Law School Auditorium will be distributed to students on the waitlist whose requests cannot be filled with tickets to Rockefeller Chapel until Auditorium capacity is reached.
Please contact Candace Bergeron (email@example.com) to add your name to the ticket waitlist or to request simulcast tickets.
The University policy on academic dress is as follows:
A degree candidate wears the robe and cap appropriate for the degree he or she is to receive at Convocation, regardless of any previous degrees received. Because Convocation is a formal and traditional ceremony, we ask that candidates wear attire and adornment that is appropriate for the occasion.
JD candidates should have a maroon robe with black velvet stripes and a black velvet tam. (The hood you will receive at the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony is a gift from the Law School, so you should not rent one.) JD candidates can rent academic attire from the University bookstore for $60 before Friday, May 30.
JD candidates may rent graduation attire in one of the following ways:
- Going to www.oakhalli.com/UniversityofChicago. Orders must be received by May 30, 2014.
- Going to the University of Chicago Bookstore and asking at the front desk about ordering a tam and robe. Orders must be placed by May 30, 2014.
Please be advised that after May 30, 2014, there will be no refunds for cancelled orders.
In addition, you will receive an academic attire rental card in the mail with your other graduation information, which should be mailed out to all graduates by the University Registrar during the 5th week of the Spring Quarter, or around April 25. If you do not receive a card by May 2, you should contact the Bookstore at 773.702.7712.
Tams and robes will be available for pickup at the University of Chicago Bookstore located at 970 E. 58th St. (on the second floor) during the following times:
Wednesday, June 11: 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 12: 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Friday, June 13: 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 14: Beginning at 7:00 a.m.
Tams and robes must be returned to the University of Chicago Bookstore immediately following convocation. A late fee of $20.00 will be assessed for all gowns returned after June 14th at 4:00 p.m.
LLM candidates should have a black robe (no velvet stripes) and a black mortarboard. LLM candidates can purchase academic attire from the University bookstore for $47 between April 1 and June 1. LLMs are strongly encouraged to purchase your attire as soon as possible to ensure size availability and avoid long lines. You will be able to keep the robe and mortarboard as keepsakes.
If you have any further questions regarding renting or purchasing graduation attire, please contact Erin Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org and put “Law School Regalia Question” in the subject line.
No adornment of any kind can be worn outside the robe or on the cap.
The University Marshals reserve the right to prevent people from marching if they do not adhere to academic attire restrictions.

The Graduating Students Dinner (for 3Ls and LLMs) will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Law School. The Graduating Students Dinner is open to all graduating students. RSVPs are required. Students will be notified when they are able to begin RSVPing for the event.
**Please note that we cannot accommodate guests at the Graduating Students Dinner.
The examination period for 3Ls and LLMs runs from May 23 to May 26.
Bar exam prep courses usually begin on the Tuesday after Memorial Day, but some may start during the exam period. Please note that exams cannot be moved because they conflict with bar exam prep courses.
