James S. Whitehead is a senior counsel in the Chicago office of Sidley Austin LLP, which he joined in 1975 after clerking for the Honorable John Paul Stevens on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He received his B.A. in Economics from Yale University in 1970 and his J.D. from The Law School in 1974.
Mr. Whitehead has practiced employment and labor law for over 30 years. He has extensive experience in employment litigation in federal and state courts and administrative agencies, including discrimination, harassment, wage-hour, and other federal and state statutory and common law claims. He has represented the nation’s railroads in employment and labor relations cases under the Railway Labor Act and other transportation statutes. He also has handled over 60 labor and employment cases at the appellate level, including cases in the United States Supreme Court and nine of the federal circuits.
