As a member of the Board of Directors of the Sentencing Project, a criminal justice reform and advocacy organization in Washington D.C., attended portions of the 2001 United Nations World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, the Non Governmental Organization pre-conference and other related events in Durban, South Africa.
   
Member of the 1999-01 "Executive Session on Public Defense" sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, Harvard Law School and the JFK School of Government, Harvard University, designed to improve the quality of representation to the indigent.
   
Member of the Criminal Justice Working Group of the Washington D.C. International Human Rights Law Group.
   
Worked with the American University's School of Public Affairs Justice Programs Office on a 1999 evaluation of the Montgomery County Public Defender's in Dayton, Ohio.
   
Served on a committee of lawyers providing assistance to Senator Carol Moseley-Braun prepare for the Senate Judiciary Committee review of the qualifications of U.S. Supreme Court nominees Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer.
   
Testified, in June 1995 before the District of Columbia City Council on adequate funding for the Public Defender Service.
   
Served as Chair of the American Bar Association's Criminal Section and testified in February 1994, before the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives on pending national crime legislation with a particular focus on those provisions related to juvenile crime and prevention.

William R. Ming Award, Cook County Bar Association, for work related to the antigang loitering ordinance including testimony before the Chicago City Council and as co-counsel on the amicus curiae brief filed in the United States Supreme Court in Chicago v. Morales, June 1999.
