Robert A. Helman
Mr. Helman has been a partner at Mayer Brown LLP since January 1, 1967. He served as chairman of the firm from 1984 to 1998. He has a general law practice concentrated on corporate and securities law, including corporate governance, M&A and restructuring matters. He served as a director of Northern Trust Corporation from 1986 – 2006 and has been a director of several other publicly-owned companies. He has been a Lecturer in Law since 2006.
Mr. Helman attended the University of Illinois and Northwestern University (B.S.L. 1954, LL.B 1956). He was Associate Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review, and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He began his law practice in 1956 with the firm of Isham, Lincoln & Beale, and became a partner in that firm in 1965. He has been active in professional, civic, and charitable organizations, has contributed articles to legal periodicals, helped organize the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago (serving as President 1973-75), served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1956-58, is a member of the American Law Institute, and has been a trustee of the Brookings Institution, the University of Chicago Hospitals and a member of The Council on Foreign Relations. On October 28, 2015, Mr. Helman received the Lifetime Achievement Award from The American Lawyer.
Mr. Helman was born in 1934. He and his wife, Janet, have three adult children, two grandchildren, and have lived in Hyde Park for more than 50 years.
