Tom Cole has been a partner in Sidley Austin LLP since 1981 and served as Chairman of its Executive Committee from 1998 through 2013. Throughout the period of his leadership of the Firm and subsequently, he has maintained a substantial practice in public company M&A and corporate governance. He has advised clients on dozens of business combinations valued at more than $1 billion, on spin-offs and on takeover and proxy contest defenses. Tom has advised numerous Boards of Directors and both standing and special committees thereof. He taught the corporate governance seminar at The University of Chicago Law School for five years ended 1998 and began teaching it again in 2013. He is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare and a Trustee of The University of Chicago. In 2001, Tom was recognized by Chambers Global as one of 26 U.S. lawyers included in its list of the “Global 100 Lawyers.” He was designated an M&A “Dealmaker of the Year” for 2007 by The American Lawyer. In 2010, Tom was among 19 lawyers named to “The Directorship 100,” the NACD’s list of “the most influential people in corporate governance and the boardroom.
