Alexandra Holt '07 has been named Chicago's new budget director by mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel. She is currently an attorney specializing in infrastructure privatization for the law firm of Baker & McKenzie LLC and previously worked for Budget Director Bill Abolt under Mayor Richard M. Daley.

David Hoffman ’95 recently joined Sidley Austin LLP as a partner in the litigation group. Hoffman, who is a Lecturer in Law at the Law School, is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney and served as Chicago’s Inspector General.

Steven Koch ’82 has been named as one of mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel’s transition co-chairs. Koch, who holds both a JD and an MBA from the University of Chicago, is a Vice Chairman at Credit Suisse and a Presidential appointee to the Independent Advisory Panel of the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board.

Ariel B. Waldman, Class of 2001, has been appointed as the Senior Counsel to the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, where he will advise Attorney General for the District of Columbia Irvin Nathan.

Paul Grewal ’96 was recently appointed as a US Magistrate Judge for the Northern Disctrict of California. Grewal is the second sitting South Asian Federal Magistrate Judge in the United States.

Julie Kunce Field, Class of 1985, was appointed as judge for the Colorado Eighth Judicial District by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter on January 1, 2011. Field has a background in mediation and arbitration, having worked most recently as a senior mediator through Colorado’s Larimer County Mediation since 2002.

Edward Siskel, Class of 2000, has been hired by the White House Counsel Office. Siskel’s duties will encompass a broad array of issues, including oversight from Congress.

Born in Mexico, Martinez moved to Chicago at age 3. After receiving his J.D. from the Law School in 1980 he joined the Legal Assistance Foundation, where he spent seven years representing indigent and working-class clients in landlord-tenant disputes, employment discrimination cases, unemployment benefit hearings and other legal matters.

The State Bar of California named Harry Sondheim, ’57, as the inaugural recipient of the award, which will bear Mr. Sondheim’s name. Created in 2010, the Harry B. Sondheim Professional Responsibility Award will be given every three years to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the development of attorney professional responsibility standards in the state of California.
