When James Cole, ’95, was growing up in a neighborhood not far from the Law School, his family was often strapped for cash. “We were on welfare more than we were off of it,” he recalls. “I remember having big blocks of government cheese delivered to our house.” As a youngster he sold candies at his church, and he liked the feeling of making a contribution to his family’s well-being.

Carla Volpe Porter, ’82, is now in her second decade as general counsel at Renaissance Technologies, the hugely successful New York City–based investment management firm that the Wall Street Journal recently called “one of the most successful hedge-fund companies ever.” “I love working with such brilliant people,” Porter says. “Life at Renaissance is never boring.”

Ashutosh Bhagwat, who resides in Moraga, California, has been appointed as the Board member for California Independent system Operator. Ashutosh Bhagwat was appointed by Jerry Brown, California Governor on May 2, 2011 to a term that expires on December 31, 2013.
