John Delehanty '69 Appointed to Patent Mediation Task Force by Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution
John Delehanty, '69, a Member in the Intellectual Property and Litigation Sections of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., has been appointed to the Patent Mediation Task Force by the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution (CPR Institute), a nonprofit alliance of global corporations, law firms, scholars, and public institutions dedicated to the principles of commercial conflict prevention. Mr. Delehanty was also named Chair of the Subcommittee on Unique Issues in Patent Mediations.
The formation of the Task Force by the CPR Institute marks an effort to explore ways to improve the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in patent disputes. The first project of the group is the development of an “Effective Practices Protocol” (EPP) for promoting mediation of patent disputes. The Task Force has also formed three subcommittees to begin to examine mediation best practices from various stake holder perspectives. Mr. Delehanty will serve as Chair of the Unique Issues in Patent Cases Subcommittee and is joined by fellow members Bruce G. Bernstein, M. Scott, Donahey, Don W. Martens, Hon. Paul R. Michel, Steven W. Miller, Maxim (Mac) H. Waldbaum, Michael Walker and John K. Williamson. The work of the subcommittees will be to gather information, conduct surveys and lead focus groups with the goal of completing the protocol in 2013.
Mr. Delehanty is a trial lawyer with over 35 years of experience in litigating patent, trademark, antitrust, corporate and employment matters for companies throughout the United States. In addition to his litigation, his intellectual property practice includes counseling of clients, including a major pharmaceutical manufacturer, on patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and licensing issues. Mr. Delehanty is also an expert on legal ethics and professional discipline and served as Chair of the Committee on Professional Ethics of the City Bar and Panel Chair of the First Department Disciplinary Committee. In recognition of his professional achievements, he was named a New York Super Lawyer in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011.
An active member of the AIPLA and the NYIPLA, Mr. Delehanty served as a member of the AIPLA Amicus Committee and is a frequent speaker on intellectual property litigation issues at AIPLA meetings. He was the founding Chair of the Internet Law Committee of the NYIPLA and is a former member of the NYIPLA Board.
A committed advocate of diversity in the legal profession, Mr. Delehanty served as President of the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation from 2006 to 2008, which awarded over $600,000 in scholarships to minority law students. He is also a member of Mintz Levin’s Pro Bono Committee and a former member of the firm’s Diversity Committee.
He received his A.B. from Brown University and earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
