Crain's Chicago Congratulates Gerald Ratner '37 on His 100th Birthday

Gerald Ratner turns 100 today and has been a Chicago lawyer for more than 75 of those years — still coming into the Gould & Ratner LLP offices on occasion and going over the books.

His client relationships are similarly long-lived. He has counseled the Crown family on headline deals going back to mid-century, such as the 1959 merger of Material Service Corp. with defense contractor General Dynamics Corp. and the 1961 sale of the Empire State Building.

“He has been involved, from a legal standpoint, in just about everything we have done, especially on the real estate part,” Lester Crown, chairman of Henry Crown & Co., said in August.

After World War II, Mr. Ratner partnered with University of Chicago Law School classmate Benjamin Gould to form what today is a 50-lawyer firm.
