Environmental Law Society
The Environmental Law Society (ELS) is a group of students interested in environmental protection. ELS hosts a number of speakers to discuss green policy issues. Law professors, scientists, litigators (in large firms, small firms and nonprofits), environmental advocates and other professors have all been ELS speakers. We also like to host discussions of green issues; our most recent was a discussion on whether the federal gasoline tax should be raised to discourage consumption (and to make the tax shift revenue neutral, both in the aggregate and distributively, also raise the standard deduction for the federal income tax). The popular used book sale, held every quarter before the mad rush to buy brand new textbooks, is completely run by ELS. Finally, this year we've begun an Environmental Law Clinic where students participate in environmental litigation by assisting practicing attorneys. First year students are especially encouraged to take part in this exciting program.
