Banking
When opening a new bank account, there is a rather lengthy clearing time for out-of-state and out-of-country checks. You should, therefore, bring travelers' checks with you or be prepared to use a credit card for many of your initial purchases.

Most banks require two pieces of ID to open an account. When opening a new checking account, request that your check numbers begin at three hundred. Some local businesses will not take checks with low numbers as those checks are likely drawn on a new account.

The University has contracted with Citibank to be the preferred provider of financial services to the University community. As part of this agreement, Citibank furnishes free checking accounts to all students. A Citibank branch office is located on campus. Prospective students may call Citibank (800-745-1534 ext. 96) to open an account in advance.

Automatic teller machines are available in the basement of the Law School, the Reynold's Club, the Bookstore, the Business School, the Goldblatt Pavilion (in the Hospital), and in the Citibank branch (at the Ellis Avenue entrance, next to the Hospital). Other ATMs in Hyde Park are located at Mr. G's Coop, the Hyde Park Coop, Kinko's, Market in the Park, Osco, and Walgreen's.
